If new levers are O.K for you Avid do some which are canti compatible and they pretty good.

A hacksaw will work fine, as long as you're not ham-fisted. I was poking fun at the M900 on a Pedestal comments. Shmoo produced the group in the 100,000s of units numbers. They were expensive then. They're (relatively - cough, cough, pb*bikes) expensive now. But they're certainly not rare by any means. Now if you were planning to cut down the blades of some Box or Altek levers to make 1 finger brakes, I'd say don't be crazy. Find some Dia Compe levers and have at it.
