Not sure what bikes you've got or about the event but if it's 50 miles, I'd be thinking light-weight hard-tail.

Edit: Just Googled it - looks fun!

Watched it last year. My local race so would be rude not to give it a crack.

I thought the Maxxis Ikon is supposed to the new do-it-all tyre? At least in anything short of mud.
