1990 Marin Bear Valley Max Tyre Size

TYPE111

Retro Newbie
A couple of years ago I resurrected my old BV (though not to the same quality as the thread I saw on here!!). As I just use it for cycle paths (Sunday ride of about 50kms), I put on Continental Contact tyres which are 1.75" wide. I've now found out about a few good areas around Perth but will need MTB tyres as it is pea gravel and forest. Hardly any mud as it's so dry here but have been told the gravel means the Conti's won't cope.

I'm currently on an oil rig and want to do the ride when I get home (before the weather gets too hot) but the choices are limited at 2" width and below.

Anybody got any recommendation of tyre or the Max width I can get away with. The wheels and forks are all original. No suspension (just psi and cartilidge for comfort). If I can fit a 2.1" tyre the choice is almost endless, but tyres narrower are mostly hybrid. Also don't want to spend much so looking at $30 each from wiggle or chain reaction.

Cheers

David

2.1 should be fine.
Plenty of decent tyres for under £20, Nevermind £30, take your pick.
