The Salmon of self doubt... has been cooked in butter

It sounds to me like you don't have a longer-term ambition, and are living from day to day.

I'd start off by imagining how you would like to be in 10 years time, and then deciding the steps necessary to be there.

Are you reasonably content with what you do, and is the money OK?

What I'm wondering is whether you're fairly happy with your life, but peoples' comments are making you question it, or whether you feel you've unfulfilled potential that you really should be aiming for?

If you're reasonably happy with what you do, and have a reasonable amount of time for the fun things you like to do, then why bother how it sounds. Life and time outside of work, to my mind, are very important things. I'd only start worrying if there's something you feel you are destined to do, but haven't yet tackled.

I havent had a 'real' job in nearly 4 years. Driving a cab has made me ultra lazy regarding my so called career.
:?
why aint it a real job. It provides a much appreciated service and you pay your way in life. Are "real" jobs only those with contracts of employment prepared at some head office? and perhaps a HR dept, a works car park and coffee m/c? Perhaps there needs to be suited boss there for you to aspire too. With all due respect, what bollox LGF. If you dont like taxi-ing thats different, but its defintely a "proper job"

The beauty of self employment is freedom, the downside is less security.

Chin up though mate, I've had people turn their nose up at me when they've realised I'm a gardener, I feel sorry for them, they'll never be truly happy!! Self doubt and regret can be pretty crushing at times but you need to ignore them, modern life is conditioning people to want to be rich and famous when that isn't attainable for 99.9% of the population, whatever happened to wanting to be normal and happy?!?
