...at around 3am this morning, sitting in my whiffy taxi.

I havent had a 'real' job in nearly 4 years. Driving a cab has made me ultra lazy regarding my so called career.

The most common question I'm asked is 'why is an intelligent (? ) guy like you driving a taxi?'. When I realise they are talking to me, I usually scream inside 'Cos I cant get a ******* job!!' and verbally reply 'because every job I had in this decade, I got made redundant from'.

Why dont you go back to college?

The courses here are whimsical at best offering no real basis for an education. Any computer courses offered are just very basic (this is an E.M.A.I.L. etc) and are worthless. I cant afford anything that I would like to do from the OU and even then I have no direction in what I want to do.

I did BTEC Electro mechanical engineering for 5 minutes before the nasty old fashioned course tutor scared me off College for a while.

Smoke and drank my way through a GNVQ Art & Design course 3 years later and wafted through life till about '97.

When my Girlfriends brother in law said 'what the **** is he doing driving a taxi??' after an evenings drinking putting the world to rights...

A fucked up child hood (no, really, I am lucky to come out of THAT fairly unscathed), plagued by self doubt and no strong role models to poke me into the right direction, at the age of 36, panic is starting to set in...

:?

could be worse. Just look at kids in the third world now they do have shitty life.
You still have a healthy body. many have lost an arm, leg or are blind. You have friends and family that love you. So your not alone
:D

Oh and you live in a country with many freedoms. Unlike most of the world

You will be a bigger failure if you define your life by what job you do .

I get dismayed by people who given the work they do should be decent , smart people but often aren't .

For instance , up until recently I had no English qualification what so ever , so I should be the last person to correct an English degree holding persons punctuation and grammar .

Don't worry about having to follow the same path as other people ; maybe they are on that path through fear .

oh at least with your job as a taxi driver. Is far better than being stuck behind a desk for 7 hours.

Or take a few french lessons and move to Marseille....

Chin up though mate, I've had people turn their nose up at me when they've realised I'm a gardener, I feel sorry for them, they'll never be truly happy!! Self doubt and regret can be pretty crushing at times but you need to ignore them, modern life is conditioning people to want to be rich and famous when that isn't attainable for 99.9% of the population, whatever happened to wanting to be normal and happy?!?

why aint it a real job. It provides a much appreciated service and you pay your way in life. Are "real" jobs only those with contracts of employment prepared at some head office? and perhaps a HR dept, a works car park and coffee m/c? Perhaps there needs to be suited boss there for you to aspire too. With all due respect, what bollox LGF. If you dont like taxi-ing thats different, but its defintely a "proper job"

The beauty of self employment is freedom, the downside is less security.
