St Petes is nice but I prefer Sanibel/Captiva Island, but then the family has a condo down there. The islands have a quieter more relaxed feel to them which is nice for me, but could be dull is you are looking for a party atmosphere.
September is still god awful hot and you'll be slap bang in the middle of hurricane season. Even if you don't get blown away by a passing storm you'll still get very wet from sweat.
There's a reason you'll only find tourist in Florida during the summer. All the sun birds have gone back north to avoid the heat...
I'm not wanting to put you off or anything. I just want to prepare you for what to expect.
Oh and stew-b is right. The Keys are miles from Orland. Figure 5 hours to Key Kargo and 7 hours to Key West. This does not take into account stops and all. Still all the traffic may be coming out of the keys if the locals are fleeing an oncoming storm
