Raleigh Dyna-Tech Pro

Getting around to building this one that arrived earlier this year. I had been looking for a DT-700 frame and have been accumulating some 6400 Tricolor to build it to something approaching catalogue spec. I gave up as what I saw was too small or too rough.

While waiting for the right one to come up this 2080 tubed Dyna-Tech Pro came up. Think I’ve got a 1990 model which was a frame only option and it’s just under the Cronos in the range. Forgive me - this is all internet wisdom so correct away! It was the wishbone rear stays that did it for me. From what I’ve read 2080 is Reynolds 753?

Anyway, it came with a lovely Mavic headset and what looks to me like a high end SKF bottom bracket. The bottom bracket certainly feels like a high quality item, would be interested to know more if anyone has any info. Both were pretty stuck, the bottom bracket eventually came out with the right tool. The headset I’ve ended up leaving - if it ain’t broke etc. I tried to undo it with the right sized spanner but it wouldn’t budge, I didn’t want to risk mullering the alloy so as it feels perfect I’ve left it alone. The only reason for removing would be to change for a Shimano 600’to match the rest of the bits I’ve got but Mavic it shall remain.

Some parts I’ve accumulated. The Tricolor I had hoarded a load for another build, this is the best of what’s left dismantled, fettled and oiled along with some brifters courtesy of @Mod-Master which I’ve now refurbished. Turns out RSX hoods fit these!

The stem/bars wasn’t initially sure what to go with but opted for gunmetal type finish

Some Tricolor hubs on grey Open Pro rims sorts out the wheels. I’ve read that the rear on this is 126mm, this hub slotted straight in. I’ve not measured anything so not sure if that’s a good thing or not.

To finish off some Michelin Dynamics as they are tan wall and cheap! I’ll see how we go with those once built. My last experience with cheap Michelins was with Speediums and they were shite horrible tyres. 02BAE0C9-F0F5-4FB7-A51A-360EEA7122FA.jpeg

My last step before starting to build will be a thorough clean, cut and polish of the frame so will be a while yet!

A minor stumbling block I’ve hit is it has these Oakley reflective decals on the front forks which I guess are of the time. My initial thoughts were I don’t like them, I’d like it clean and to remove them and at best stick them on my tool chest. Any opinions? Worth trying to save them? Can stickers be saved? Probably over thinking this.

Looks absolutely great. Under the dustcover/black band on the headset there should be a lock screw that will then allow you to undo the headset cap as normal. Sorry if you already tried this!
You are absolutely correct! It was the grub screw holding me back. Now, do I swap the Mavic out with the 600 headset I’ve got and recoup some money on the build or do I leave on one of the best headsets ever made……….!

As an aside just ponder at what age/stress has done to my brain……the photo below is an identical headset, on a bike literally touching the one I just struggled with, fitted by me, granted a few years ago………how do I not remember this!!!!

Was having a bit of a panic having read on another forum that these are 126mm spacing and someone had cracked theirs by forcing a 130mm hub in the back. Not just that but I knew the hub in mine is a 6401, running a UG/HG compatible freehub and an 8 speed cassette fitted which internet wisdom/velobase says is 130mm.

Anyway, measured mine, the hub is 126mm OLD and the dropouts are 126mm. Panic over.
