Raleigh 26tpi heatset

Are you certain it's an old raleigh 26TPI? I worked in a bike shop in the 70's and by then Raleigh / Carlton had mostly swapped to normal ISO for it's road bikes with the "roadsters" still hanging on to the old Raleigh in-house 26TPI.

I would have expected by 1990 that the headset would have been ISO ?

I have counted the thread and there is 26 to the inch

Have you actually tried a 'normal' nut on the forks. All my Records and Sprints have been standard threads.
