Well thanks to furlough, I’ve discovered this forum and to say it’s helped my boredom and drive during this lock down is an understatement. Every night I’m reading these Threads and reliving my youth and it’s give me a kick up the arse to use my spare time having a go a building a few old bikes.......
Having just cut my teeth on a Alpinestars, I wanted to relive my earliest Christmas wishes of wanting a Muddyfox [ I ended up with n Apollo sis from Halfords ].

Having been browsing various sales platforms I stumbled across a muddyfox with some nice geometry at pocket money price.....however it was in red, never been fond of red nor red rust everywhere ....plus I wanted to give a fingers up to the brand snobbery of so many people who don’t realise how important the bikes and the marketing tool of muddyfox was in the instrumental days of the British mountain bike origins and where we are today. As a brand, they were cutting edge but unfortunately got dissolved into that dreaded falcon brand in the late 90s along with claud butler, British eagle and a few others so here it is ....the beginning

Firstly time to realise I didn’t have any of the tools I needed ...... amazon prime here I come ....bike stripped and now to decide on the colour. Always wanted to do a gator fade as per Klein but didn’t think this was the one to practice it with. So ....let’s strip no polish it ...should be easy

Re:

I’m now thinking I should have painted it instead, grit 400, 600, 800 and 1200 followed by t cut. After a bit of advice on Facebook page, a mop was purchased for my drill, autosol and moms polish followed by 18 hours on and off in the garage .....which incidentally quickly received a heater and a fridge...oh and the camping chairs out the t5

Re:

So I polished the cro mo forks, the existing seat post, the original cut down bars and stem. Put some stx v brakes on, exage front and rear mechs along with existing stem that all received a polish.

At this point really hated the tyres, set no grips .....being a bit of peacock and working in design [ tattoo studio ] I looked at options ....white ONZA tyres nos......how f##king much ...seriously????? Kenda tyres followed, a amazon special seat that would look as near to zebra pattern as a blind man would think ...non-white grips ....oh red shiny bits ...so brake bolts, retro quick release’s. in red ....hang on don’t even like red ...but looks good in small doses ...followed by first mock up

Good job mate
Just seen it on the other post minute ago, but with white tyres. Keep up the good work.
Muddy Fox were the beez kneez at one time, heck I bought a second hand high end downhill muddy Fox 15 years ago worth a lotta money. Not seen another of that quality again.

You did a damn good job on this.

That is 2 polishing posts that have blown me away now!

Also liking the minimal annodised red highlights as a doth of the cap to the previous colour.

To say I’m happy with it so far is an understatement ...then I rode it...........feck me used to riding a modern 29er and this thing felt so slim and so unstable in a addictive sense ......had some good feedback from friends so sod it ....xt mech, 8 speed xt cartridge, Mavic rims front n rear ....lighter crank ....haven’t a clue what model but came off a 96 cinder cone ...and yes got polished ....more red anodised bits appeared through the letter box ....waiting For red jag wire ......and now I really want some Girvin forks ........tbc
