Mavic rim history

I've seen a few cracked 517's around the eyelets. They are very good rims otherwise though.
Recently sorting out my wheels, all three 230 rims I had were cracked / split on the braking surface, one of them had hardly been used by the look of it.

517 made of mavic's cheese like aluminium.....
Really, my daily ridden 517's (in fact, been on 3 different bikes and pretty much the only wheels i have used since 1999) are still 100% intact and solid

Yes, 517s are the same material as 717s and are quite durable. Much more so than 217s, which were/are prone to cracking around the eyelet holes.

The lightest and weakest of all the rims mentioned were the 230s, which had a very low profile and thus less fundamental strength than a 217 or 517.

I second this, I've loads of 217s and also X517s - which happen to be my fav rim, the 517s are definitely an improved version of the 217s, which I bust many of when I was a teen weighing just 9-10 stone.

IF ANYONE HAS A GREY X517 I'M DESPERATELY ON THE HUNT FOR ONE!
