Kona Impact headset restoration ?

Lavadome

Retro Newbie
I have a Kona Lavadome 1996, stripped and the bits lying around.
The main thing keeping me from building it again is the fact that the headseat, an Impact headset , is broken.
I mean the races are still OK but the ring keeping the balls together is completely broken.
Is there a way one can replace the original one with only loose balls or is it gone forever.
I would need the headset to fit the original P2 forks (threated ones) again.
Thanks for the input.

Do you mean the cage all the balls are sat it, if so that's not needed. Just use the balls loose, you may need an extra one though and if you do that it's probably best to get all new balls. They don't cost much.

EDIT to add

The bearing retainer in the assembly uses twenty-two 5/32" bearings.
The bearing retainer in the lower assembly uses fifteen 1/4" bearings

Yes, that is what I mean : the cage is twisted and broken.
So measure the loose balls and replace them all would work ?

Just get new races, they're meant to be replaced.

Most local bike shops will have a card on the wall (like the ones with Mr Porkys pig lumps and Peanuts on in the pub) with Weldtite bearing races and individual packs of ball bearings.

Looking at about a £5-£6 for both.
