Installing fixed cup

I find a nice thin cone spanner, as used on wheel hubs, fits those raised flats nicely.

Sorry - the spanner I listed above is obviously the wrong one. This is the correct one:

Together with a threaded bar and some big washers, this can be retained properly and give you some purchase.

Oh dear. I probably shouldn't admit this but I was trying to install the fixed cup on the wrong side! Realised my stupidity and used the bolt and washer technique. All in fine now except...

There is zero lot of vertical and horizontal play in the spindle. Would this be the bearings? Is it possible to still get replacements?

Those would be loose ball bearings........did some fall out while you were fitting the BB ?

There were none missing and I'm pretty sure none fell out as they were caked in new grease and fairly secure in the cages. Could it be that the cages need squeezing in a bit to tighten them?

Cages? are those the same bearings you took out. I'm not sure caged bearings were about for BB's when your bike was made

Everything I have reinstalled was taken out off the bike as it came. I thought I had a picture of them but I can't find it, I only seem to have the adjustable cup and lock ring.
