Grips - by year

I've reached a bit of a memory blocker as to what grips would be appropriate for my '96 / '97' / '98+ builds i'm doing.

For earlier '90's builds it's been quite easy to choose grips as they seem to be more memorable - but I can't for the life of me think what I was holding on to beyond about '94 actually! My last 'full bike' which came with grips would have been a Specialized Stumpjumper - which had it's own Autopilot grips, and many brands had their own - which were often switched out for something better. My '93 KHS had Bontrager branded grips, but I did swap them out for some clear Tomacs at some point.

Any pointers for what would be suitable grips by year?

For me I'd say the list looks like this;
- late 80's = anything foam, think 'Grab-On' and the like
- late 80's into 90's = heavy rubber, such as Tioga
- early 90's = lighter rubber such as ODI Attack, foam grips particularly Ritchey WCS
- slightly later early 90's = Onza Porcipaws and ULES, and TOMAC Tioga? grips
After that I'm stumped!

+1 for yeti.

Also Fred salmon fish grips (poor man’s porkipaws) and I think Specialized had a decent range, probably aligned to their tyres at the time. I remember Overend grips (or were they bar ends) but that wouldnt have been mid late 90’s

This'll get you the 1995 grips, http://www.bikepro.com/products/grips/grips.html
but if you pop to the prices, you get a little later. http://www.bikepro.com/ad_copy/grip.html
from a very USA point of view though.

should start you off at 1997 (keep in mind Mombat often used the time they were released, not the model year)

Edit to round it off, 1993 grips (or late 1992) https://www.retrobike.co.uk/threads/grips-or-no-grips.454139/post-3330980

Had scanned this one here. Possibly one of MBUK's least interesting but one of the most useful reviews.

@mk one One for the archive?

Cheers

Great info, thanks all!

I suppose I could have looked in my various MBUKs / MBis🤦‍♂️

I’ve got several sets of grips that should suit after all 👍

You now have to go scan or photoscan, as best you can, four different articles and 6 adverts...
