The best way to date them is by the serial number. The first 4 digits refer to the month and year. The serial number is on the dropout.

I did look at the LE frame mentioned here but wanted a complete bike.
I do however want to put chrome rigid forks on mine and do away with the shocks and would love some help in identifying what forks might fit or of anyone has any?

That frame is a 1996. GT made a rigid fork called a bologna lite fork. On polished aluminum bikes (ball burnished) they were always black.
