erractic idling Subaru Impreza

Re:

Thanks HF, yup, hundreds of Subaru forums!
My neighbours Vauxhall had exactly the same problem which was the coil/leads as Neil suggested.
I'll have some free time over the BH weekend to spend some time on it.

Hope it's not the ICVS as they have a price which will make your nose bleed...............

Re:

it is a 98, so you can locate parts from low milers easy as pie though.

I love that aspect, the commonality between models and free availability of spares.

Re:

The non turbo models are usually bullet proof, even when neglected and abused.
Whip the air filter off and spray some throttle cleaner down the inlet. This should clean up a sticking butterfly. You may even get your eyebrows tidied up at the same time.
Check the thottle cable isn't sticking;the basics...
Changing the plugs can be a larf!

Re:

Carl, take a pic of the coil. There are a few different ones. I have a known-working coil in the shed; maybe some leads too. Could save you a few quid...

Re: erractic idling Subaru Imprezza

as mentioned above, try all the simple things first like plugs/leads and coil. it should have a central coil, top of the inlet manifold. These do come up at scrapers so may get some bits there, early Forester may have the same engine components depending on your model year.

early non turbo engine didn't have a MAF sensor ( fits between ail filter housing and the engine) O2 sensors normally bring the light on before causing erratic idle. Remove idle air control valve and clean it with some sort of carb cleaner.

what you are describing sounds like your knock sensor ( top of the engine underneath the inlet manifold) has a single bolt going through it with a connector 6" off the back of it ( depending on which one you have)

however i would conclude that you really should get some proper technical assistance as i can offer you all sorts of pearls of wisdom and spends 000's of your pounds and be no further forward.

get a local friendly mechanic to cover all the basics ( including air leaks on the air intake side) as he may spot something simple and cheap.
