Carlton Cobra Identification

Rab Wilson

Retro Newbie
Hi, I just bought this frame which has been sold to me as a Carlton Cobra. It arrived by courier today. It has serial number 162787 stamped on left rear dropout. It certainly looks like a Cobra frame, but there is no rear braze on hanger for rear centre pull brake? It has the Carlton head badge.

Might early Cobra's not have had the rear braze on hanger for rear centre pull brake??? Or is this frame not perhaps a Cobra...? There are no original decals on the frame. Paint does not look original, though it IS a chrome frame... and is in pretty good condition!

I believe it has been sold to me in totally good faith... as stated, it looks and quacks like a Cobra! But the missing rear braze on hanger for rear centre pull brake seems a bit of an anomaly...?

Does the serial number tally up with known Carlton Cobra serial numbers?

Any help appreciated folks!

Well, it certainly looks like a Carlton Cobra. Acryllichrome and all that. One of the earlier ones from 68-72 which did not have the later Crespera Lugs. For that era the numbering went a bit pants too !

I'll check mine for a brake bridge.

Here you go :)

Not mine but will do :)

I have a cobra frame waiting to be built up and it also has no brake cable hangar. I think they're just like that.
