I think the last approach has long gone.

On my Alu-O I use a hacksaw, junior, to cut till about the threads. Then bend in.
Didn't damage the Alu threads either as you stop sort and keep trying to crack the last bit. Might have needed the cuts in two place to allow a section to be removed to make it easier.

So, it's currently in a bath of caustic soda, and fizzing away very nicely thank you very much.
