98 Steel Rockhopper Comp

Re: Newbie 98 Steel Rockhopper Comp

I had 100mm z1 bombers on My hopper for a good few years.. it handled a little bit slower on the flat / uphill but mostly was fine :)

once riding... with the extra sag from the 100mm.. the actual length of the fork doesnt work out to be much longer really!

that said i do prefer mine with the Marzocchi Atom 80's i'm currently running.. in my eyes its the perfect fork for my bike!

I agree with you Spacehopper! it does ride a little slower than before but overall the hight seems fine. Still not taken with the Bombers tho, the old Z3's seems much better but hoping once I have managed to strip then and adjust the rebound it might be better!! ;) If not I might be on the look out for some 80mm sid's or the like???

With still moving I found some old brochures... wonder how many of these are about now???

Re: Newbie 98 Steel Rockhopper Comp

After looking on the Marzocchi website I found the manual which say's there is some form of adjustment for the rebound so had a look.
With the shocks fully compressed I can't reach the rebound adjuster with an allen Key so I need to try and find a hexagonal bolt.

I've searched on line but can't seen to find one, would anyone be able to help point me in the right direction?

Re: Newbie 98 Steel Rockhopper Comp

Managed to find a few bargains on eBay. I've been after a set of XTR leavers with combined shifters for ages and found these gems! :D

Also found a USE Atom Carbon bar and picked some carbon spacers up too.

I've kept all the old parts as I have won a Specialized Rockhopper 14" frame , again in steel which i'm going to build up for the Mrs's! :)

Re:

It's been a while since my last visit but since then I have added the new XTR M960's and rear mech to match too. Also swapped over from the RaceFace Deus riser bar to the USE Atom straight bar and ESI Chunky grips.

After riding the bike with the longer travel forks and riser it did make the front end feel quite high.
The move the the flat USE has made a real difference and really quickened the steering no end!

Still not 100% sure on the Longer travel Bomber's - I'm persisting at the moment but will see what happens next!

The part's pile is building ready for another project bike............. For the misses! Watch this space!!

Re: Newbie 98 Steel Rockhopper Comp

A new arrival came last week which made me very happy!!!

I've been after a new wheel set for a while after having mis-matching wheels front and rear. I'd kind of set my heart on some Mavic rims, but there wasn't to much around which are V brake compatible.

Then these came up on eBay, 2013 Mavic Crossride UB rims for a bargain price!!!

I've ordered a 9sp SRAM PG980 cassette and a gold KMC chain to hopefully finish of the drive train!!!

Re: Newbie 98 Steel Rockhopper Comp

It's been a while since the last update. After sourcing the Mavic wheels I still wasn't happy with the Bombers up front. The travel upset the front of the bike to much, pitching lots under braking.
After a long hunt I found some Fox float 80RL's perfect for the job. With some titanium brake bosses fitted that have done the job perfectly.

Final addition's include a USE stem to match the atom bar, ESI 'Chunky' grips and a Shimano Carbon Brake booster sourced for the rear.

Just need some new tyres (Skin wall or black to be decided) She is finished.

Re: Newbie 98 Steel Rockhopper Comp

great bike! I prefer the version with the old-marzocchi, but with steel 26"frame and full xtr components looks so good!!!

Re: Newbie 98 Steel Rockhopper Comp

Thanks mattiamerca, I've been away from the forum for a quiet a while, especially with the weather being so good I've managed to have a great few months riding.

I've really loved the change to the Fox shocks upfront, the difference is huge and the performance from them has been amazing.

Following on there have been 2 more upgrades. A tyre change to some Charge Splash back's which I must say look and feel great. The biggest change however has been with the crank. I've had a few sets which I planned to fit (lying in the garage a ISIS triple RaceFace Evolve then a SRAM XX 2x10 carbon) but wasn't sure on the ISIS and then the look of the SRAM.

After lots of help on the forum here, settled on a new RaceFace Turbine 2x10 which is brilliant. Shortened the cable and limit screws to use the XTR shifters and existing front mech but it shift's great. So strong and stiff, I never thought it would make that much difference. But after a number of rides round Gisburn Forest it's brilliant........here you go!
