By all means fit a better lever combo but you will find that the original Mountain LX and the later 'Push push' style STI shift/ brake combo work quite well with v-brakes. They have enough cable pull so as to not feel spongy.

That's really nice. Love the old Saracen's with that style of graphics. I have a black Limited Edition frame of the same era in the back of the car waiting to go for powder coating. It's condition is nowhere as near as good as yours. Good to see your decals all intact. Mine peeled off decades ago. I ordered a new set direct from Saracen a long time back and now I can't find them anywhere!!!
