'88 Rocky Mountain Fusion

Retro Newbie
Hi Everyone,
I picked up a 1988 Rocky Mountain Fusion from a fellow board member that was in need of work... I have just finished cleaning up a 1992 Stratos and wont be winning an awards for being original but it looks nice and rides well. The frame had the results of years of commuting and riding so it ended up being painted but still stayed silver...
I decided that on this bike it was going to get similar treatment. I am trying to find correct parts but will end up putting some newer pieces on as needed. Only thing is I'm not staying loyal to the color although it will be dark aqua blue (color that was under the bolt on components) it certainly isn't stock, it has a lot more to it.

I received it missing a few bits and the wrong front rim. This is just after I got going.. I had to document the decals so I could track down or recreate them as needed; I wasn't going to be able to get these off in 1 piece as I just don't have that skill.

Frame had lots of nicks and little rust spots trying to start so I stripped it down.

Next up, I made my trip to the auto body store I use and picked some paint.. I like the color, its something a bit different. I painted the forks as the factory did, white. I also did the stem but I think its gonna get sanded down and changed to black.

Next up was trying to assemble the bike up again. Decals I had made went over instead up under the clearcoat - Im not sold on them. Im still waiting on my NOS Cro-mo and tube decals to arrive - going to make sure I get a good scan of these as I will end up recreating the correct headtube decal for the year. One of the rims is a Araya 7X but the front isnt. They were put on the truing stand and made straight and round again, bearings all repacked after inspection. Bottom bracket was really bad, pitted beyond repair so it will be updated but was measured up as I am running the biopace cranks still. The cranks were cleaned up and look really good with abit of effort applied to them.

Look what was dropped off today! Minty

Happily I have a proper Ritchey seat post in very good shape and I will be comparing black or white seats towards the end as I have a white Vader enroute plus the non stock black white on it now that was pulled from another project.

More soon...

I am so jealous.
Impressed with how far you've got so quickly.

Not sure if you have noticed but you are labeling some pictures as Stratos.

Progress made...
Some bits arrived, Updated BB and grips from Jenson USA. I have to say, amazing service into Canada. Ordered Monday, arrived Wednesday at 4:30pm and all in were cheaper then LBS.

Plus some Araya with LX rims from 1988/89 ish

All attached.. almost no miles on them.

Derailleurs and the rest soon.

Mark
