'88 Rocky Mountain Avalanche

I actually picked up this bike two summer ago, but never got around to posting anything. But there's another that got posted recently so I figured it was time.

Here it as delivered;

These are hardly common, but I've never seen one with the BB junction and top tube painted like this one. It seemed to be somewhat original; the forks, stem and, post, but probably not the parts. I picked up a parts bike for it a few days later.

It's an '86 Kuwahara Sierra XT, used very lighty, and came with a second set of wheels. So it's 6-speed non-hyperglide. The Rocky catalog says 7-speed, but I was happy to have a super clean set of XT parts.

I picked the black anodized wheels, found a super-aggressive stem, and here we are;

I need some 2.0mm cables and housing to finish it up, but I really like it so far. It's not all rosy though, because there is a crack in it - right where that blue spot is on the top tube. I think something heavy fell on it. It's a weird V-shaped crack, and only a very small dent.

And finally; last summer I needed to round up the serial numbers of all my bikes, so I took off the cable guide under the BB and found this.

Maybe this is why the paint is different? Maybe they did one by mistake?

Anyway, I'm pretty happy with it.

Re: '87 Rocky Mountain Avalanche

:cool: very nice, shame about the crack though.

How long is that stem? :shock:

Re: '87 Rocky Mountain Avalanche

Shhhhhh.... <whispers> ya Kuwahara wears 1987 'new' XT, 1986 was Deerhead with 7spd Hyperglide appearing with the revised XT range for the 1989 model year

Shhhhh......

Re: '87 Rocky Mountain Avalanche

The Rocky catalog says 7-speed

And catalog pics show 6spd XT thumbies

If you're picky about these things.

:LOL:

So, 1989? With Deore II? ;)

If you wanted that pesky 7spd Hyperglide nonsense

Colour scheme makes this 1988.

Now the beer has worn off, Deore MT60 with 6spd would have been original if it were 1988, and I had my woefully unfashionable bullmoose bars on my then mtb

I can see why RM are so popular - my contemporary bikes look very old fashioned next to these.
