1986 Bob Jackson 531c, finished ! !

Re:

Had the hubs apart today, isn't it always a relief when the bearing races are in good condition?

Took the rear one apart and polished the body,

Really easy to get shiny thankfully! Sent for a longer axle so I can run 7s.

Also tackled the front hub, before,

Polished up,

And re-built, using a better, if not period, q/r skewer.

Sweet start!

I'll start cleaning up the rest of the groupset this week too.

Re:

Howdy Mr Histry ;)

For the hub bodies I just used soft rag, well old thermal t-shirt, and Solvol Autosol. They're not anodised. Only took a few minutes

Any more thoughts on the paint job Mike hubs have come up well.

One of two designs, Clive.

The longer rear axle and freewheel arrived today, so I fitted the axle, spacing out to the width of the freewheel.

Don't worry, it's not screwed on tightly! Put it in the frame, just to check, rather now than when the new paint is on.

Also, the Cinelli XA stem arrived in the week, looking a bit tired,

So I thought I'd see what the possibilities of polishing it up were like.

The top is done, although hard to make out. When I finish it, it may look too shiny when clamped to the Cinelli Giro d'Italia bars, but we'll see. Hope to finish the polishing tomorrow.

Polish the top of the bars to suit, it will all work together

I did think about that myself !

Finished polishing the stem today,

I think it looks okay with the bars in their original finish, so I will leave them as they are.

De-greased and washed the groupset today, ready for putting on.

And still not decided on paint colour

Metallic dark blue, or metallic burgundy are favourite. Dark is good I think, with a silver groupset.

Now about to sort out what spoke length I need for the wheels. ;)

Re: 1986 Bob Jackson 531c

They need to reach the rims or it will look odd.

Don't say I didn't warn you.

Thanks. Any more pearls of wisdom from the depths of your shed, Mr Hist'ry?
