Evenin' all,

I am still trying to understand Shimano model numbers - I have a Shimano DuraAce AX seat pin - where does this fall into their range?

I think Dura Ace is top of the range but with the AX attached, where is it then?

As you may have read previously, I have a bike from 1983 with some Shimano components on it and I am trying to decide how to proceed.

I would appreciate some guidance as to their naming from that era - I think there is DuraAce, 600ax, 600 and more (Arabasque may be here too)- but what is the order?

Dura Ace was the top group, but came in two variants: AX and EX. EX had more traditional styling (with 7200 serial numbers), while AX was the more modern aerodynamic variant (7300). It's probably simplest to direct you to the 1982 catalogue here:

Your AX seatpost will be one of the variants shown here (7300 series):

Similarly, 600 (one down from the top) came in AX and EX variants.

The above sums it up for the era covered by Dura-Ace and 600

with Shimano looking at the trend for aerodynamics rather than "drillium"...

From then it seems to go a bit pants LOL

Thanks for the responses - absolutely, exactly what i needed.

I am still confused by Shimano's numbering system perhaps i should look at Campag components!
