. Any tips on getting a reasonable finish ?
Effectively you went backwards. Since you have a lathe though I'd start with some 1000grit wet and dry working up to whatever you can get your hands on something like 1600, then try some scotchbrite pads and if you can get them fine ones. Next autosol or meguairs NXT metal polish.
