Round 3: Peak District ~ Three Shires Road Ride

RB-Peaks-Road-001.jpg

:: Date: Sunday 1st June 2014

:: Distance/time: approx 50 miles with a stop for food at a pub or café as the group prefers. Several short cut options available in case of mechanicals/weather.

:: Meeting at: Sutton Mill, Gunco Lane, Macclesfield SK11 7JL. Please arrive by 10.00 a.m. for a 10:30 a.m. start.

:: Directions: Postcode: SK11 7JL - Sutton Mill - This is the location of the new Ride and Repair workshop.
Google Map --> http://goo.gl/maps/YpDbO (This centres on Colourserve Ltd who were the previous occupiers - the arrow shows where to park)
More specific directions to the start point will be given closer to the ride - there is ample free parking, toilets and changing facilities available.

:: Terrain: Quiet country lanes, with a decent bit of climbing thrown in.

:: Route: Leaving Macclesfield we'll take on the classic road climb to the Cat and Fiddle which, at an altitude of 515m (1689ft), is the second highest pub in England.
We'll then head over into Derbyshire and Axe Edge Moor and drop slightly to Flash which at an altitude 463 metres (1,519 ft) above sea level claims to be the highest village in Britain. We'll continue further into the beautiful Staffordshire Moorland across Goldsitch Moss and on to Morridge.
The route takes in a fantastic long open descent down to Longnor for a food stop at the 20 mile point.
Then we'll head into the centre of the historic spa town of Buxton to refill water bottles at the famous St Anne's well, just before the ominously named Long Hill, a steady climb that takes us north west out of the town.
Dropping down a very fast descent into the Goyt Valley we'll wind our way past the reservoir back up towards the Cat and Fiddle. Before we reach the top we'll turn, crossing the earlier route to pick up the long drop and fantastic scenery towards Leek on the A54.
Another short final climb out of Algreave takes us to a great ridge ride down past the Hanging Gate with views of Shutlingsloe aka 'The Matterhorn of Macclesfield'. It's all downhill back to the start point here for some post ride refreshments.

The ride will be taken at a reasonably gentle pace and there are several short cut and bail out options should they be required.
Be aware that there are a few short steep climbs here and there so perhaps that 42-23 bottom gear might make things a bit harsh on your knees.

If you fancy it, get signed up.

>>The ride will be taken at a reasonably gentle pace<<

is it possible to give me an idea what "gentle" means in this context , please ?

Think middle aged, sedentary male, slowly returning to cycling.......

Are you related to Daj?

Best way to approach this is to ascertain what avg speed you can maintain in one of your regular rides. From memory it wasn't blindingly fast last year but there were a few short steep bits to get the blood flowing. We always regrouped at the top.... :D

Re:

Nice to see the stats from last year there Robin.

The route we'll be doing this year is a different one. It does take in a few sections from last year's route but it's just under 50 miles and avoids the short steep climb up to Roach End amongst others. I reckon it will be an easier ride.
I'll post up a few more details later on this week/weekend.

The pace will be kept at a gentlemanly one. We'll always regroup at junctions and summits and nobody gets left behind. Especially at the cake stop...

If you're really struggling then there are short-cuts back to the start.
