Cool... thanks... actually took a punt on some eBay Bontrager wheels... fingers crossed they're OK.

Excellent, yep, will weigh everything... was going to leave the BB in as it's smooth enough - but decided to remove it so I could weigh everything.

Chainset I linked to is actually a Stronglight - SPA recommend and supply a Stronglight BB to match. Price and weight look quite good so I might go for it. Square taper UN7x are getting harder and harder to find it seems...

Wheels are here. Not all that excited by them in the flesh - they're a bit mass produced and modern looking (what did I expect?) and not staggeringly light... I'm sure I have 90s MTB wheels that weigh less... maybe not. Spokes seem to have some corrosion under the paint but otherwise seem in pretty decent condition.

Still I think they're OK for what I paid, fairly appropriate for the bike, and they'll get me on the road. Maybe I'll build something nicer myself if I like the bike once it's ridable.

Those are bottom end modern Bontrager - but the bike would have been supplied with the period equivalent "Select" wheels.
I upgraded mine - several times - and so have a selection including XXX Carbons :)

Yeah I guess so. Good enough given the cost but admittedly a not particularly smart impulse purchase... as I say, if the bike floats my boat I can always upgrade at a later date... but I'd rather not chuck too much money at it in the short term.

Right. Trying to decide what cassette to get for this... I want fairly low gears for the hills around here...

The mech has a short cage so on paper it's a 27t max cassette size and 29 teeth total capacity.

A 50/34 chainset uses up 16 of the 29 capacity leaving just 13t for the rear... so a 12-25t HG50 or 13-26t Miche Primato should work fine...

But with sensible shifting, could I get away with say a 13-28 Miche Primato?

Any thoughts here? Is swapping to a compact chainset pointless if I'm keeping the short cage mech?

Right... decided to ignore the specs and go for an 11-30 HG-50 cassette. It's pushing it but I reckon the mech will cope as long as I avoid small front/small back combinations. If not I'll swap out the mech. Hopefully with a 34t chainring on the front I'll be able to get around OK!

Compact chainset next... might wait until there's a bit more money in my PayPal account... :roll:

Had half an hour spare so cleaned up the mechs. Both in decent nick, not too heavy IMO, and not even bad looking this generation of Tiagra.

Assuming they work OK with the cassette I've got no plans to change them... might give them a polish, mind.

Snapped off the QR lever on the rear brake trying to free it up this morning. That'll teach me to try to fix things when I'm hung over...

Oh well, it's an excuse to upgrade as Hamster suggests. Has anyone got anything?
