I'm in the Peaks on holiday until the 17th! I will see if I can make the necessary arrangements to lengthen the holiday and join in.

I’ll put my name down.

Would it be wise to bring a bike with a granny ring?

Post subject:  Re:

Depends how much of the climb you want to ride - the steep side up from the ladybower end coming back will probably be largely be a walk for many, but the several miles of descent afterwards is well worth it. I'd personally be more focussed on things to help with getting down over rocks well (like big tyres).

I've done it one way as part of a 50 odd mile loop on a single speed and loved it.

Post subject:  Re:

Bring the one that'll give you the most grin factor on a 6 mile (not too steep) sweepy rocky descent . Grin factor and turning up is the important bit , if it's got 2 wheels and your riding it with a smile it's a bike . Bonus if you can still go to work the following day after riding it . (some of us are getting older so full rigid and swinging on brake levers all day can be too much  )

Post subject:  Re: Cut Gate Killer Sun 19th May

Having just checked to route (on a map) I think it's fair to say the 20ish miles is a lot more accurate than the 13 part in the opening gambit , quite a chunk is flattish though so it's not really a killer just killer fun in places .

On a fully rigid you don't need to brake that much on the long descent back to Langsett at the end - the bumps keep your speed down a bit and you benefit more from being able to wrap four fingers round the bars and hang on. The key is to get a good firm grip with your hands and let your arms go loose and the bike dance around beneath you. (he says...)

you will need to brake plenty dropping down to Slippery Stones on the way out though.

I'm not sick enough to suggest you ride over...

All my bikes are rigid, but I find dirt drops more comfortable than flats so that narrows my options a bit.

Hey up guys, i'll be there. Thought about bike choice and i'm going to bring the totally right bike for the job in hand! Like Matthew said, some of us are a little older now and need all the help we can get! Oh by the way, it's not an E bike either.
See you all in the car park. Hope weather behaves itself.

Just brakes to fit, chairing to re-align, chain to find and fit, possibly a handlebar swap and hopefully not too much more. Shakedown ride in the car park I think...
