Wheely good advice (Kona Hahanna)

(ok, just lost my original post so this one's just to the point...ish)

After a new set of wheels for my trusty ol' 95 Kona Hahanna. Since I got back into bikes some 6 1/2 years ago (thanks to this forum and http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/member ... amp;u=6233 ) I've more or less upgraded all the components over time, bar the bars, stem and wheels.

Received a pair of Mavic Crossland SUP* via eBay yesterday. They arrived damaged (see pics) and as I waited a fortnight for delivery I'm weary of going down the 'used wheels' path again.

The Kona's my everyday bike, used mainly for carrying heavy shopping, which is why I'm thinking of buying new, as the wheels NEED to be reliable. The weather here in Finland can be pretty hardcore in winter (though right now it's boiling! )



So, what are your thoughts on this? My heart says 'retro' (via retrobike?) but my head's now saying that I should go for new. My budget *tops* would cover something like this (too many other bikes on the go to spend any more )

If it's needed as a daily I'd personally opt for something new that you know is unlikely to fail. I'd also be opening a PayPal claim against the seller of those wheels

Cheers Tony - that's my thinking too but I keep imagining nice old-skool XT hubs etc etc BTW seller refunded right away.

I have a front Deore DX on Mavic 231CD I think in great order if any good?

Have you still got the wheelset? you should be able to get that dent out and straighten it up enough to use

And how old style do you want to go, what year? most wheels wont stand up to the winters so ones that can be serviced easily would be a bonus.

I wouldn't want to risk bodging them as the shopping's pretty heavy. If you look closely you'll see they're cracked too, along the top of the rim wall - not good :/ By old I guess I mean something from the 90s-early 2000s. The Kona's a '95 and I've fitted mainly Deore II MT60-62 parts (from memory). Yeah, the winter's are serious here - lots of grit on the snow and ice.

Didnt notice the crack. I have rode DH on plenty of rims with dents in like that one, will not fail, only an issue if using tubeless.

Shame, as they are good wheels. I bought a bike that came with a set (my second pair) and the seller claimed they had recent replacement rims and that his lbs had more. I've no idea what shop, but I picked the bike up from Brent cross in London, so can't be far from there.

A quick Google finds a few shops that look older and may be candidates for older parts. Might be worth a few calls if you want to use the wheels.
