Zoom stems - any good

Ned used them for sponsorship purposes - and I think only for the '92' season.

They're perfectly usable bits of kit and pretty nicely finished.

If I was doing a spare parts bike I would use Zoom, bt not on anything more flash than that.

I would certainly always choose Zoom over their Market sector competitors of the day - like the Kalloy, Uno etc...

Stems availability is stranglely swings and roundabouts. One minute there are 1" quills everywhere, the next nothing. I spent a couple years looking for a NOS one for my Ned replica, finally sourced a used but tidy one off here, and the next minute find a brand new one in an old shop for 15 quid...

The new one was far too short though so I gifted it and stuck with the used one. Now apparently they are back on the bay?

I would also advise anyone contemplating buying off eBay to check they are indeed 1". Sellers I've been in contact with in the past have simply measured the outside quill diameter as being 25.4 mm and listed stems as one inch.

Of course, in reality a one inch quill needs an OD of 22.2 to fit in the steerer, so worth double checking first.

Cheers,
BB

Zoom stems

Retro Zoom stems/bars/posts are good kit

Nice and light (for steel) and well made, very strong

Snap the stuff up, cheap cos it was made in Taiwan by the unglamorously named Hsin Lung

The forks... The forks are some sort of sick joke, like Suntour forks, they didn't even make forks BITD so I'd guess all their current stuff is probably poo

Some guys have claimed Hsin Lung is behind Club Roost, but that's not the case

Old Zoom = good
New Zoom = bad

The old stuff was bloody brilliant. Exceptional value, light weight & high quality. The old Zoom 'Competition' quill stems were about as light as you could buy in the early-mid nineties for < 1/2 the cost of a Control Tech or Ringle unit. Zoom 130 bars (130 gm) were super reliable, 20 grams lighter than Hyperlites & 1/3 the price.

Look for stems with 'Competition', 'Original' or 'Stage' (ahead).

Look for bar models '130', '150' & '170' (denoting their weight).
