Zinn from ebay with issue's, but hey, still sweet!

Re: Zinn on ebay

I received the bike last Monday.

Lovely frame, except the seller failed to mention a dent on the top tube. :(
The rest of the frame is in good condition with the odd mark etc.
Most of the Campag parts are heavy worn, but that's not a problem as I have NOS replacements.

I'm quite disappointed about the dent, but still want to keep the bike.
It makes my purchase price too high though.

Can the dent be repaired easily? I'm guessing the top tube will need a respray.
The rest of the frame should polish up nicely after the removal of some helecopter tape and a touch up in a few places.

Any ideas how much the repair will cost and if there's a decent shop in London that can do it?
I would prefer to avoid courier costs if possible.

Cheers

Re: Zinn on ebay

Sorry to hear that the bike has a dent in it. I would contact the seller as it was described as 'amazing condition' which is a bit over the top looking at the images. I know its over 20 years old but it still should have been mentioned.

I would politely ask for some sort of compensation.

For the repair, I think somebody could fill it and then respray it. I had two dents in my Centaur that Dave Yates repaired and resprayed. It was quite expensive but well worth it.

I'm sure somebody around London could do it, whereabouts are you?

Re: Zinn on ebay

I had a bit of a nasty shock like that when my D.O.G.S... frame arrived, as there was a hole in the top tube. However, I had bought the frame for what I considered to be a bargain price, so I just accepted it and got Chas put a new top tube in.

I am sure there are more than a few top frame builders in the London area, but if I were in your shoes, I'd be inclined to take it into Chas and see what he says. From the photo's, it looks like it could be filled with brass or silver solder, but you have to know what you are doing with 753, which is why I mentioned Chas.

I know they are there on a Saturday, so it might be worth a phone call and a trip.

Whatever you do DO NOT have the paint done by ColourTech (who Chas uses), they are so incredibly slow at getting work out, it is painful.

Re: Zinn on ebay

perhaps get the repair done by dave then ask if he has a list of alternates or use the reccomended painters in the paint thread?

Re: Zinn on ebay

Thanks for the advice.

I live in Queens Park, which is central NW London.

Excluding the dent the top tube is in the worst condition with small scratches to the paint.

I was thinking to ask for a part refund to offset the repair cost.
Can anyone provide a rough estimate to how much this should cost?
I really need to contact the seller tonight as it was delivered on Monday.

Also, I've been researching and it looks like the Z-753 wasn't painted blue as standard.
After the dent issue I'm now very slightly paro the frame is 531 with 753 decals.
Is there an easy way to identify 753 frames?

Re: Zinn on ebay

On the dent issue I would make contact first with the seller with the pictures you have here, point out that there is a substantial dent that to rectify will not be cheap and will more than likely require some paint also...get them in the loop early

then email the pics to dave asking him for a guestimate and if he obliges pass on that amount to the seller asking them for some kind of recompense, you won't want to I know but it might end up involving ebay and a claim against the seller through buyer protection

Re: Zinn on ebay

Well I feel slightly vindicated after trying to point out signs of heavy wear, rather than hyping it up as "mint with a quick polish".

Always worth saving the pics to your machine and zooming in... Nobody pays for larger pics on eBay now

I'd say you're well within your rights to ask for "cashback" based on the description:

Stunning... The bike has had Very little use... Condition is amazing for its age... no sign of rust and the odd mark
The Campag is 1993 so maybe they changed colours for that year?

Re: Zinn on ebay

I feel gutted for you mate.
If I paid a grand+ for a bike that was described as.... The bike has had Very little use,Condition is amazing for its age, There is no sign of rust and the odd mark.... and it turned up with a heavily dented top tube and worn out components, I'd be asking for a full refund!
What a joker

Re: Zinn on ebay

I would contact the seller ASAP about the dent, if he does not respond, or his response is less than empathetic, file a dispute via PayPal (assuming this is how you paid) - the work will cost about £50 or £60 I should think, Giom6 had his Zinn resprayed blue and can probably tell you the details of how much and where, his is an excellent match imho (he also drew the decals)

I recently bought a frame on eBay that the seller, it appeared, had gone to great pains to photograph concealing a badly scratched seat tube and a dent in the top tube. When it arrived I immediately noticed these and contacted him, he ignored me until I opened a case with PayPal thus putting his balance £300 in the red, we were able to come to an amicable amount of recompense.

I would not worry too much about the theory that the 753 was not painted blue as standard, send a PM to member 'featch' who built your bike and ask, and bear in mind that team bikes were blue, and more than likely 753 too, plus it's not like it's a Kona ro a GT and they were making 5,000 frames and having them painted all the same, it would be pretty easy for them to paint any bike any colour.

I knew about the heavy wear to the components, but that's really not an issue for me.
It's the dent that bothers me. Looking at the Ebay pictures again it looks like that side of the top tube was purposely excluded.

If the dent wasn't there I'd be ok with the purchase.
