I like my local off-road loop a lot, as since moving to Branston its the first time I've ever had 2hrs of off-road riding, in a nice loop, on my door step. Its just so damn convenient, and made even better as it can be shortened to 30mins, 1hr etc depending on what I've got time to do.

But......it hasn't got that 'Wow, what a ride' factor.

The 'Peddars Way' was my old local trail, but even that was easily forgotten

Thetford Forest is my all time favourite, as it has EVERYTHING a MTBer could want; fast flowing singletrack, open fireroads, bombholes and a great technical downhill. It even offers an on-site cycle shop, visitors centre and cafe 8)

It used to be a half hour drive from my house, but its now a 2hr slog. But hey, worth every minute

What are your best riding spot's?

Dalby Forest, Wharncliffe Woods, Glentress, Coed-Y-Brenin.

Tough call on my favourite, Wharncliffe's nearest, but not very long (although the trails are being extended), Dalby's superb (possibly my favourite), Glentress (goes without saying that the Black route is one of the best in the UK), C-Y-B is very good, but too much fireroad climbing.

I need to ride more natural stuff next year as I didn't ride any this year...

Best purpose built stuff I've ridden is at Gap Creek in Brisbane, although Glentress was pretty good fun too (would have been more fun if I wasn't a beer-swilling, chainsmoking slob at the time I went there. I should go again now I actually have some fitness and decontaminated lungs).

That said, I do like riding natural trails, particularly miss the downs...

Lake District - more bridleways than you can shake a stick at. That's where I learnt my trade.

Yea, do agree with you, there is something particularly nice about riding completely natural trails. Especially when you think nobody else knows the trail is there......

I've been riding the same forest since 1989. The loops constantly change as trails get built by us and destroyed by felling or wind damage. I've ridden better places but this is close to my heart as I've helped build and maintain most of the trails. It has a bit of everything and is a challenge on a rigid singlespeed or on a 7" travel monster bike. I'm not bored of it yet, and I've never managed a clear run despite clearing all the sections individually - It's still a challange and I love it!

Best bit... I ride from my house beside the sea :o)

too many to choose. local trails= cwmcarn area, black mountains & brecon beacons. les gets/ morzine for killer DH stuff, new zealand, utah & colorado for the truly epic rides.

actually if I had to pick 1 trail, it would be the boulderfield up the side of the tasman glacier near mount cook NZ. purely for the awesome views & total sence of wilderness. 7000ft scree slopes to your side, blue-white glacier below & stretching waaay into the distance. its kinda like the grand canyon, sit, look, loose 4hrs.. i'm just a sucka for a good view

That makes 2 of us.
Wales took my breath away when I did the Retro Ale Wobble last month. First time I've cycled off-road there; just truly amazing
