Yeti FRO differences.

I am curious to the differences between the FRO throughout the years. Is there much difference between a 1990 FRO and a 1998 FRO?

Basically, if you took a '90 FRO and a '98 FRO, powdercoated them both the same color, how could you tell the two apart?

Also, any noticeable differences through the years?

The 1990 FRO is a pain gauge Patco tubing one and will possibly show cracks. The later Pro FRO is made out Tange MTB and cracks are less likely. The final ones also have the tail formed out two tubes instead of one and it the monestay behind the bracket is discontinued. A gusset at the monostay, the nr of bottle mounts on the dt, welded vs rivited tt guides, tt shape are other indications important with determining age. I would think YetiFan, Mombat among other imformation sources should be able to tell you exactly till into detail what to look for.
 
do you mean 88 fro and 90 fro? I assume '98 FRO was a typo. There wasn't a (steel) FRO in '98 AFAIK, but thats too new for my radar. .

In 1996/7 the FRO came back as the FRO alloy. Kind of like a kokopelli with loopstays so exactly how that differed from an early ish (but not first generation) ARC I'm not so sure. . . 1 1/8" headtube if its like the koko', but I'm not sure, I've never seen one.

IIRC, the FRO steel returned for a season late on as the Sherpa. JOE will be able to give us nore skinny on that. .

If we're talking '88 FRO, yep as stated, PATCO as opposed to the PRO FRO' tange. 1" headtube too as Scant says.
Real early ones were different dropouts too.

And then as everyou have the anomolies that all low volume builders cough up, so you have things liek Kestonians round top-tube model.

Certainly by the PRO-FRO, things were much more into the batch production groove rather than a series of near one-offs.

Ive had 3 steel Yeti's!

A 92 FRO(still have it!) A 94 PRO FRO and a Yeti Sherpa.

By the time it got to the SHERPA Yeti had lightened it up and steepened the angles, did away with 1 piece back end and looked a bit more mass produced as said earlier on here.

Ive had rust problems on all of them apart from the 94 PRO FRO:(

My Sherpa is currently having a restoration, im having a frame builder refabricate me a loop stay for the drive side on it then fresh paint :wink:

Yup, I think it now goes without saying thats steel Yetis need to be kept indoors. Mine are for dry days only now. Sad to say that it means I have a few that are fair weather riders- I have others to use in the salt and rain.
