Yeti- do's, dont's and any useful info you may have!

Folks,

I'm looking to buy an early 90's Yeti frame/bike. Any experts out there have some tips on what to look out for, what to avoid, any top tips for buying one?

Sorry if this has already been covered at some point but any useful info would be appreciated- if you have any for sale either then shout

usual problems with rust, espically in the lower seattube & the loopstay back end. also on the earlier fros, were the loopstay joins the oval tube that goes to the BB shell. that area could sometimes crack, later models had an additional section welded in this area.
mid 90s alu yetis, occasional cracks to the back of the seat colar area, flaked powdercoat also fairly common.

all that said, late 80s & early 90s yetis are waay cool

All I can really add is the wise words that one Mike Jackson said to me when I proudly wheeled my FRO into Bromley Bike Company:

check the loop stays for cracks!!

most have been ridden hard and had hits to the rear dropouts, the powdercoat bubbles badly with sweat but not really a structual issue (i hope) on the aluminium frames (arc)

second the cracks around the seat clamp

the manitous will be toast

these are truely cult mountainbikes. i love them

I agree, there is something a bit special about them, I just need to be lucky enough to come across one that has been looked after...here's hoping!

What everyone else here said == true.

-Keep in mind head tube is 1 1/4. Not really a problem IMHO.
-Top tubes ding easely (even steel ones) from brake levers if you drop it.
-Rust, I sprayed mine with frame savers, hope they last another 20 years.
-Area around seat collar cracks sometime, feel the internal surface of seattube, it should be smooth.
-Frames run a bit too large for its size IMHO, but hey, this is race bikes and not trekking bikes so thats why they are so roomy.

Oh.. about that Yeti cult. I have a FRO and an Ultimate both from ~91 but I would rather not be an exclusive member of some f"n pathetic "bike cult"
