1988 Kona Cindercone

Picked this one up a while ago and recently got round to giving it an overhaul. I got a muddyfox courier comp back in 88 and remember seeing a picture of the 88 cindercone in one of the UK MTB magazines shortly after. It was a guy on an 88 cindercone riding through a mine somewhere (dont think ive ever seen a pic on this site - think it may have been a review of the bike). I looked at the geometry and it seemed far more aggressive with better standover clearance, and sloping top tube. dont think there was much in it pricewise but the cindercone just looked more racer focused.

stipped down the frame to see if I can get the bb out and then a rebuild.....but fancy something different that just a catalgue spec rebuild as the others have been posted on here

Like these a lot, I had one for a while. What are you thinking then? I was going to upgrade mine (or downgrade as sum may think) with flex stem and 91 Xt with sti as I would of bitd but it got robbed.

well as much as I am a fan of catalogue rebuilds I was thinking this needed to be something slightly different, plus i know theres been a few on here. In line with 'back in the day' I wanted the Explosif but it was way out of my league. I pretty much wanted anything top of line with deore XT II, without really appreciating the real quality was 1) in yourself (skill & fitness) 2) frame & Forks.

So I figured Id go with an XT rebuild throughout, U brake etc.

Sounds good, i still fancy another but a big one and try and get it as light as poss and retire it for road use and light off road doubt I'll find one in Spain though.

Anyone have a spare Mountain LX shifter?

Which side are you after mate? I've got one but would need to check which side it is.

Re:

Just checked and unfortunately it's LH. A bike I bought had exactly the same scenario as yours - although mine had the shifter mount ground off the lever too
