I think it’s an ‘89. Rear mech, shifters & the booster on the u brake. A lot of bits have been changed though. Wheels for sure.

FWIW I have an earlier one with 24” wheels - pic in sig - and it’s a slightly different shade of blue.

I tried to find one for my daughter. They are like hen's teeth!

These all had U-brakes in 1988 didn't they? The colour scheme matches the 88 Catalogue, not the 1989 one. The catalogue says that the 15" frame model had 24-inch wheels, which does not appear to be the case on this model, so it is likely the 17" as stated.

Seat post is hopefully inserted only a few mm in the pictures, else its somehow been bent.

There was at least 2 colour schemes for the 89 Rockhopper comp despite what the catalogue may show. White and blue and yellow 100% I have them both but I think there was a black version as well, which I may even have but cant remember for sure so would need to check.

Also it's the wrong stem for a 88,
it is the 89 style. Has a Deore II rear derailleur, one year only and that was 89 models. 21 speed shifters also indicates it's a 89 as 88 would be 18 speed. Also in 88 they didn't put the comp decal on the tt from what I recall but in 89 they did.

This is my old 88 Rockhopper Comp in catalogue spec for reference, the 89 model was a more lighter blue than the 88 and like gtturbo said the 89 had MT62 Deore ll groupset where the 88 had the MT60 Deore groupset.

It's sold now, went for £78 buy-it-now. Not me but I was tempted as it was 15 miles away.

Sorry I confused things with the wrong assumptions/catalogue on the prior page. This is the correct one, as you all stated, making the bike a small 15" 1989 Comp model. If I'm not mistaken, in 1989 these Rockhoppers were the same frame as the base Stumpjumper, but just fitted with different components level specs.
