Can get XT and LX with cartridge inserts and Alivio and Acera which are same as the above but don't have XTR on them. Must they be XTR as have a nice set of LX alloy cartridge type spare.

no, not in production anymore. they sometimes show up NOS on ebay though. but remember that they probably are 13+ years old and thus hard and not really useable anymore. they were not that great when new, way too hard imho. i fully understand the need for a period-correct restoration but for a rider i'd always use Kool-Stops.

The Acera and Alivio are not cartridge, similar to the ones in your image but with Alivio or Acera on them. Whats wrong with cartridge? They were available at the same time as an up grade, not the modern lo profile ones, they have the same chunky pads and profile.

Funny this.

Do a search on XTR and see my Q.
I have some NOS pads.
Tried using them. No brakes. Faffed for hours with straddle lengths etc. Nothing.

Then Carsten pointed out that they may have gone hard with age.
Bought some KoolStop from Wiggle.
Awesome brakes instantly!

Look good, work shite. Definition of cool 8)
