Thanks for posting this South Bound, I was going to ask a related question about Shimano pads. I've just started using my old Scott with early 90's cantis and, with the original pads (which still have plenty of wear left) the stopping power is zilch!

As I'm going on the Peak Members Meet (which by the look of it will probably have some intense downhills) I need to change them for ones which will perform better - and still look reasonably retro.

I fitted some Jagwire ones which were the only ones the LBS had. They still didn't work very well - but we went down some pretty bad descents - and are pretty well worn now.

just checked my set XT m737 canti's and yes the stock pads have both front/rear and left/right markings on them, along with arrows pointing direction of "forward". they really made sure the pads where "idiot" proofed, didn't they?
