Hi folks, your friendly dense RetroBIKEr here.

Bought a full set of XT Cantis a while back and only just got round to checking them over in detail. Problem is I have 2 sets of rear pads. Presuming chap had a set of RC35s or similar so was running the equivalent of 2 rear sets. Not a problem for the seller - prob did not realise. Couple of Qs:

1. Am I right to assume that the fore and aft cantis themselves are identical?

2. Anyone got any replacement forward pads, preferably the original XT versions, if not any recommendations for alternatives, such as Koolstop??

Thanks if anyone can help.

In my ignorance, I didn't realise that there were front and rear specific brake pads..... In my V brake days I certainly never bought "front" or "rear" sets anyway.

you can mount rear pads on the front (or vice versa). it's only important that the closed end of the holder points into driving direction otherwise the pads would be pushed out of the holder. i think it was one of the tuning tips against squeeling to put rear pads on the front. just try it out. it's a little more annyoing to mount them with the long end of the pads behind the fork legs but it can be done.
but i would use Kool-Stops anyways. Shimano pads are too hard in my experience and only eat into the rim. and those are at least 12 years old and thus likely even harder.

Thanks for posting this South Bound, I was going to ask a related question about Shimano pads. I've just started using my old Scott with early 90's cantis and, with the original pads (which still have plenty of wear left) the stopping power is zilch!

As I'm going on the Peak Members Meet (which by the look of it will probably have some intense downhills) I need to change them for ones which will perform better - and still look reasonably retro.
