XC Pro thumbies and Mavic wishbones- indexing tech questions

Can anyone tell me what goes with what to get these to index?

I know some mid-nineties Konas came with Suntour thumbies and Shimano mechs, so I presume the Suntours are fully Shimano compatible. Any surprises to watch out for?

Mavic wishbones: do I need Mavic mechs? Will they index with Shimano mechs? Suntour mechs? Whose cassettes? How many speeds?

Context: putting gears back on my '92 Stumpjumper and looking for non-Shimano alternatives.

you've got some Mavic shifters :o

I always thought gear spacing was the same for 7 n 8 speed so all interchangeable(?)

Yes Suntour xc pro will shift Shimano , no problem at all .

I think mavic will too , but not 100% .

My mavic have so far been responsible for shifting:

7 speed shimano
8 speed shimano

7 speed suntour

7 speed mavic
8 speed mavic

8 speed presicion billet

Actiontec cassette
SRP cassette
Shimano cassette
Sachs freewheels

all worked well for me. Mavic seem a little more clunky than the rest and have more forgiving tolerances so maybe that's why they work across the board when others don't - and that's why I love 'em!

Not yet, but two sets have slipped through my fingers - I'm planning on getting lucky next time.

Shimano narrowed their 8-speed spacing very slightly. Campag didn't. Mavic? Suntour? No idea.

I'm still not quite sure what gearing I'll be running. The rear hub is a Phil Wood 6-speed cassette hub that can just about be coaxed to run seven 8-speed sprockets or eight nines. I'm thinking of 2x8 compact (42/28 and 12-32). I've got some Forge thumbie mounts, and the old Deores that came on the bike, but I'm wondering what else I might get away with.

Derailleur might be an XTR M910 or a Mavic 841. Just throwing ideas around at this stage.

Thanks. Can you tell me what the setup is on your Colnago? I'm interested in tying in Campag and Mavic indexing, and I've got some experience of mixing Campag and Shimano parts.

I've got a Mavic 841 derailleur here on my desk, and there's a funny little cam with a hole in it between the barrel adjuster and the cable clamp. The cable can obviously run through the hole or over the cam. Do you know what it does?
