Yeah looking at the pictures really brings home just how rough it must have been, as much as the germans are villified they were just young men following orders like everyone else.

The picture of the guy eating his lunch off the mortar shells made me smile, i mean i'm sure its perfectly safe but still.

The plane photo was beautiful too, that would make an amazing piece of art for the wall.

I was working near Lubeck a few years ago and was in the city for lunch one day when I heard a load of chanting and shouting going on.
I turned around to see a huge neo-nazi parade taking place!
I had to be physically restrained from steaming into the middle of it (and probably just as well I was!)
How the hell can the people of a nation that have been through all of that (and in living memory!) even begin to think that's acceptable?
What got me was that most of the passers by didn't bat an eyelid.

asome of those german soldiers look like boys, but i guess the same goes for most people fighting for their country.

the jeep looking thing is actually a captured german army kubelwagen - underneath the military looking shell is predominantly beetle running gear

HF read something like Stalingrad by Antony Beevor and you'll get some idea of how many Russians died entirely pointlessly, basically at the whim of Stalin, it was only when they were on their last legs that reasonable thought was put into the Russian tactics. Yes, millions were killed but millions of them didn't have to.

Correct. By the battle of Kursk they were more than match. BUT also thanks to us the British giving them all info about the battle so they were ready.

The Russians have a lot to thanks US the British for. I wouldn't believe half what the Russians claim. After the battle of Leningrad Stalin round up thousands of fighters after the war and sent them to Siberia as they were to popular and deemed a threat to 'Uncle Joe'
Don't forget the massacre of thousands of Polish officers by them when they invaded Poland.
Also they didn't enter Warsaw till after the Germans had killed all in the ghetto.

I am no more a fan of Stalin than I am of Churchill. Wars are fought by the people, not their figureheads.

We owe the Americans BIG time not the Stalinists. They supplied the British & the Russians and beat the Japanese.
