My freehub is noisy and dry as all hell, would be better to just shove a good one in there than risk being serviced?
 
I'd give servicing it a go first... you have nothing to lose if it's as bad as you say! Remove, soak in degreaser, thoroughly rinse then soak in heavy oil I think is the best way. While you have the hub stripped down you can check for pitting etc... if there is more than just freehub damage (ie pitting to driveside bearings, cone and cup etc.) a cheap way is to buy a complete donor hub off here or eBay.
