As per the title looking to experiment with a compact over my standard 53/39.
looking for 110mm bcd campag compactable rings please. ideally id like a 52/36 combination. Could swap for little used 50-34 if that worked? Thanks jon
Sorry to update needs to be 10 speed please ;)

Thanks kermit I'm not that fussy as I'm kinda wanting to test the water with the compact anyway. Would they run a new chain? Most importantly will they fit a Campag compact hidden bolt chainset? Thanks Jon
Any pics please?

Re:

D'oh

You probably need 10 speed don't you :?: :(

And on the second question I have no idea sorry I am soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo stuck in the 20th century

Kermit thanks for your efforts. I've added the 10 speed to the original post probably my confusing post. Thanks Jon

Jon, I think that campag compact cranks require campag compact rings, as the hidden bolt is actually a couple of mm away from 110. So make sure you get campag or at least campag-compatible rings, or be prepared for some careful filing if you get a "standard" 110mm ring.

Andy Thanks, I was aware of that after a far bit of research pretty frustrating what Campag have done there to be honest. I can get a 36 chainring pretty cheap is just the 52 that adds up. I kinda don't want to spend loads incase I end up not liking then. As mentioned however I might really like it and want them on the other 2 bikes! Also got done concerns over whether a standard rear mech will work Ok with the big drop at the front and large cassette at the back (currently 12-29). Appreciate any thoughts? My mate at lbs thought it would be Ok. Cheers Jon

I think if a standard rear mech should be OK - try it and see is probably the best way to find out. I run a standard 53-39 with either a 13-16 or 13-29 at the back, campag 10 speed, short cage rear mech, and it works absolutely fine. With a 52-36 there's more difference between the front rings so you might need to use a longer cage mech, but I'd try it (carefully) and see before buying one.

If you have 34-50 and 12-29 now, and want to go to 36-52, then changing the cassette to an 11-26 instead of changing the rings would give you almost the same ratios as the the change in rings would. The only downside to that is that you might find yourself cross-chaining from the small ring to 11/12/13 sprockets more than you'd like.

Thanks that's really helpful. I do have a medium/long centaur carbon mech I will hold on to fora mo then. I did wonder about the rear cassette ratios but don't have the knowledge like your good self ;) still waiting to build my steely haven't forgotten about the pics cheers Jon

Jon, there's no mystery to gear ratios, and even less when the only thing you want to check is a change of ring/cassette. Just divide the number of teeth on the ring by the number on the sprocket, then do the same with the other combination to see how close it is. That doesn't give you "gear inches", which depends on the wheel and tyre size, but does give you an easy way to compare different combinations on the same bike. 36/29=1.24, and 34/26=1.30, so those two combinations are quite close (actually, 34/27 is a lot closer to 36/29 but I don't think campag do a cassette ending in 27). 50/12=4.17 and 52/13=4.00, so from the 50/34 and 12-29 you have now you could either change the rings to 52/36 or the cassette to 13/26 (I think I said 11/26 earlier  ), and the end result is going to be very similar. Depending on how often and how much you need the highest and lowest gears might help you decide one way or another.
