LE just meant it was sold as a frameset not a complete bike, don't know why they did this, but they did.

:? How odd, I distinctly remember the catalogs having LE's as full bikes with XTR groupset and the non LE's being XT

LE's are meant to have double butted chainstays, non LE's do not so I heard.
