They are fine - I've ridden tandems with them. They are phenomenally well engineered. However, you do have to be careful that cack-handed baggage people don't bend the exposed frame tubes...

I wonder if the person who owns that Kona has tried to sell it.

The person who owned that Kona was the bloke selling the S&S couplings at the time. IIRC the bike showed up at MBUK in an ironically full-sized bike box ;-)

He had a tandem that used those fittings,and they lasted the journey,though the rest of the bike didnt.
 
Joel Metz, bike messenger extraordinaire, has a custom-built Sycip messenger bike with S&S couplers and countless tens of thousands of miles, working and touring. If they'll handle that, they'll handle anything. He reckons the saving in oversized baggage charges would cover the installation cost in just a few flights.

Bilenky or Co-Motion - one of the big US tandem brands anyway - made a tandem that converts to a triplet (perhaps even a quad) by adding S&S-coupled sections.

It would be the front triangle that would be vulnerable, of course.
Still, it wouldn't be difficult to make a clamp-on brace, to be fitted when packing.

I don't understand all the scepticism either - it's tried and tested and they obviously work well.
Still, it's a good excuse to rip the p*ss out of something I suppose :roll:

No scepticism, i just saw the add in a 1997 issue of MBUK and posted it here, not see it before, new nothing about it and didn't know it's been in use all these years either.
