ishaw the GXP is what I came to looking for the fixed axle isis spec, you can see the step down in the video.
Should be a reducer in there.

I get what you are all saying 100% but I can't help going back to the fact that it's the standard crank and bottom bracket, there must be a spacer / washer a miss somewhere:

I can't find a parts schematic anywhere for this crank. You know, like an exploded drawing of it showing all the parts.
Maybe I'm just getting old and rusty hehe.

If the cranks are gxp they are not compatible with a shimano bb without the addition of an after market adapter.
The spacer is also on the wrong side of the bb (1 on drive side for 73mm bb two for 68mm with one on non drive side usually (might have got that wrong in an earlier post).
If it came as pictured as stock, its either wrong or a strange configuration.
You could still be missing spacer washers between the arm and bb too.

It may have been a Halfords special from new. I bought it second hand as I fancied it as a work bike. Lord knows what the poor thing has been through over the years hehe.
I'll strip out the BB tomorrow and take a picture of it all lined up as it was when I bought it.

when you do that, out the cup over the end the arm bolts on to.. it will be fine one the main part of the axle, but the part between the crank face and the middle part, were the bearing sits,
see how much it wobbles, a 1mm shim might bodge it.
are you sure you never replaced the BB at some point, you are very old after all ;-)

Life was easier when we only needed to work out the length of an axle and measure a shell (or just read the documents) and then buy a bottom bracket.
then they went and buggered it up and I've only just worked out ISIS (dead simple, buy 4 bottom bracket for every one square taper) and then HT2 (pretty simple, stay Shimano read the docs for spacers)
Never looked at these other versions and god knows what they have now.
Life was easier when we only needed to work out the length of an axle and measure a shell (or just read the documents) and then buy a bottom bracket.

Ok people, here's the photo's of the chain set and bottom bracket removed from the frame, all parts are lined up as they were when I received the bike, complete with caliper measurements where possible.
Note that the plastic bottom bracket mid section is slightly bent::
