It's a stupid thing to do, but he wanted to try it, so he's done it.

The way he's sitting by that wheel when he's checking it with the tension meter makes my bum go funny though. If the wheel did fail (unlikely, but possible), he'd have a car fall on him.

Under load the tension is all on the upper spokes, and he checked the bottom most one. Fail.

Probably checking that the lower spoke hasn't lost all tension, that's one (of many) failure modes for a wheel. And if the spoke failed, the car would just go down. Not on top of him. (I've been stood next to a car when a jack failed. The car didn't actually move far. Made a lot of noise.

Not familiar with those tension meters but wouldn't it need to remain clamped in place so it had a datum point removing it would effectively zero it each time?
