Will this new chain fit my 'old' groupset?

I have snapped the chain on my Shimano Exage 300EX equiped bike. I have sorted the damage to the front derailleur, so now just need a new chain.

As a novice to this bike restoration stuff I need to know if a modern Shimano chain can be used as a stright replacement? From a bit of research the HG40 seems ideal.

Can I just pop one of these on?

Cheers. :D

Get a Sram chain...they're better!

The quality's dropped IMO since SRAM took Sachs over - I've had 8 and 9 speed ones come very close to snapping on me after not that much use. Wippermann chains are way better if you can afford the extra cash, if not then a Union (Marwi) 810 will do the job at a nicer price, although not many UK retailers stock them. :(

I've not had any problems with even cheapy chains. As long as you keep them clean-ish and well lubricated they should be reet. My current one is an eBay SRAM I think and it's been on there for ages.

@Ian Raleigh,

" A mate purchased a Sram chain and new chainset and within 7 month the chain was jumping up on the teeth "

You still mates with that Chris Hoy bloke then?

I'll get me coat. :lol:
