Just about any Shimano mech will do 9spd from about 1987 onwards.

8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

Another thing would a xtr m900 chainset work 9 speed??

My first thought about the mech was definitely yes, but the cage length has started to worry me

Not so sure now if you are using a 34t cassette, think it might not be able to take up enough of the chain and wouldn't get across to the largest cog

Similarly the chainset would be designed for the wider 8 speed chain and whilst it would work the changes wouldn't be as smooth

Why not just have an 8 speed set up, better in the winter crap as its less finicky about being set up and will keep going longer in the mud

Not really come across these issues myself - only front mech/ shifters seem to offer any real headache due to different cable pull.

I ran some some Deore II mechs in a 9spd touring system with modern ultegra 9spd STi and had no issues with chains on old chainrings (Dawes Sardar).

9spd chains work great in 7spd set-ups too.

But, like I say, thats what I've used myself.
