Will a m900 rear mech work in 9 speed setup??

Just about any Shimano mech will do 9spd from about 1987 onwards.

I ran some some Deore II mechs in a 9spd touring system with modern ultegra 9spd STi and had no issues with chains on old chainrings (Dawes Sardar).
9spd chains work great in 7spd set-ups too.
But, like I say, thats what I've used myself.
I do know from experience that only long cage mechs work properly with a 34t cassette and three ring chainset
From memory the M900 is only a medium cage at best so would have serious doubts running that sort of set up, think M910 was the first long cage version
