Why would you use anything other than thumbies?

I run XT thumbs (A term used BITD  ) upside down (I always have), which I always thought gave me more bar control when shifting in a bumpy section than the normal "above bar" position.

I remember riding a friends bike with the Mavic upside down "thumbs" - the ones with two levers in a kind of "V" shape. I preferred the ergonomics of these, it's just a shame the shifting couldn't match the shimano's

I used to love thumbshifters, but since I got STI I realise how much things have moved on. The problem I have with thumbshifters is that the arc is too big for a natural thumb movement, so you end up twisting your wrist in a way it doesn't especially like being twisted - the net result is that after 3-4 hours riding my wrist hurts like it's been broken. No suspension on my bike with thumbshifters probably increases the effect.

I don't have that problem with STI. Fire and forget. I don't need to count clicks, I just push it a bit, a bit more or a lot. The release button is great when it's getting technical as I can properly modulate my brakes, get my position right and a hundred other things without worrying about getting my finger in the right place to yank the thumbshifter.

Yeah, but Shimano 'Thumb Shifters' were around and lovingly referred to as 'Thumbies' long before the Pauls things. Weren't they?

Anyhow, I've used rapidfire, gripshift and thumbies (:)), all this week in fatc, and I have to say that I prefer RF.

They may have been...but we never referred to them as 'thumbies' back in the day.

(which isn't to say they weren't referred to that back then)

I'm mostly just giving you guys a hard time. :D

it's cause you speak "american". 8)

Yes, it's because I'm from Yankland. (pretty sure thats the correct British
slang for us) :P

As a Canadian that has been living here in the UK for 25 years I feel that
I have to step in here and offer proper interpritation of this term...
And well I love you all very much but the correct term that the Brits use is not Yankland.....

Its Wankland.
